Santiago Dieste (n. 1984) es escultor, docente e investigador en el campo de las artes visuales. Desarrolla proyectos e instalaciones en diversos espacios expositivos, explorando la tensión y los límites de los materiales en diálogo con las complejidades humanas. Ha expuesto sus obras en espacios nacionales e internacionales, como la Fundación Pablo Atchugarry, el Museo Torres García, el Espacio de Arte Contemporáneo, el Centro de Exposiciones Subte Montevideo. Santiago representó a Uruguay en la Biennalle Internazionalle di Arte Contemporaneo di Firenze, y fue finalista del Premio Paul Cézanne otorgado por la Embajada de Francia en Uruguay. Fue invitado por el NODO, Plan Ceibal para diseñar, desarrollar y realizar la estatuilla del Premio Nacional a la Innovación Pedagógica. Actualmente Santiago estudia la Maestría en Arte y Cultura Visual en la Udelar. Sus obras forman parte de colecciones privadas de todo el mundo, así como de espacios públicos de Montevideo, donde vive y trabaja.
A Furious Outbreak
This project explores the interaction of the raw material, its industrial treatment and development, and its use. The idea for this project came from my reflections about the relationship between natural resources and people. One of my main sources of inspiration for my art is and has been industrial wood cutting, and these various industrial type cuts have become the focal point of my artistic constructions. For this sculpture, I imagine the reaction of the trunk of the tree to the aggression of the tree cuts, and it takes its shape by placing each piece always with ethical/aesthetic questioning in mind. In the violence of the cut, an assemblage that gives life arises harmoniously. From this, a new dialogue emerges that relates decisions, the definitive ones of a process that forever transform a resource. Thus, compositions appear that give an aesthetic, reflective dimension to an economic, industrial, and social reality. The effectiveness and efficiency of the wood cuts allow me to connect with the wood in new ways.
