Gal Nissim is an Israeli artist and interdisciplinary researcher based in New York. She studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and received a BA in Biology and Cognitive Sciences from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and an MFA from NYU’s ITP. With research as the core of her creative process, Gal’s work studies human-animal interactions, inviting the spectator to explore the dynamic relationships between nature, culture and man-made environments, raising questions about our ecological role as the dominant species on the planet. Her work has been exhibited internationally: New York Hall of Science, Pioneer Works, Jerusalem Design Week, Science Gallery (Detroit) and GStreamer Conference (Berlin). She is a recipient of LMCC Creative Engagement, Culture & Animals Foundation, NYFA IAP, Google’s Experimental Storytelling, Made in NY, and the Weizmann Institute of Science awards for outstanding young researchers. She is currently a member of the New Museum program – NEW INC.

Don’t Cry Over Spilt Milk

Gal Nissim’s work is motivated by a deep fascination with the natural world — the reflections, and self-discoveries that occur when life is examined through the lens of non-human creatures. While technology is often used to shield us from nature, she utilizes it to employ joyful and social justice-oriented ways to bring people closer to nature. Her creative process is grounded in research into the lives of non-human creatures, seeking out discoveries that illuminate aspects of human behavior. In her latest intervention, Don’t Cry Over Spilt Milk, Nissim explores the long-time connection between human and livestock. She focuses on one of the most nourishing animal relationship we have ever had – cattle. In this site-specific installation, she presents her recent observations in Uruguay where she met farmers and cows, capturing and observing our contemporary multi-species interactions.
