UN/SETTLED:
On Migration + Movement
The world we inhabit is ever-changing; our planet spins, the air swirls, ideas circulate, and humans and non-humans are in constant flow. CAMPO Artfest 2024 explores the broad topic of migration – the physical movement from one region or habitat to another. In its general reference, the theme interrogates issues of home, belonging, community, and identity.
Through a creative lens, we tease out the topic through various entry points, starting with the basic question: What inspires movement? It may be a forced displacement, a self-propelled exile for survival, or being a part of a diasporic stream. Or the search for sought-after resources, the pursuit of a better quality of life, a desire for change riding on dreams of new futures, or the transference from one climate to another as the planet warms and chills excessively. The answers are countless and complex, many political, others environmental, and numerous unjust.
By migrating, systems are disrupted and then re-ordered. Living beings are leaving homes, families, and communities, and creating new ones, inspiring a global shift and reshaping the world as we know it.
Migration invokes travel, the crossing through and sometimes erasure of boundaries. It embodies a quest for a sense of being that is respected and inclusive. Through creativity and conversation, we aim to surface migration’s multitude of interpretations, historically and in the moment, so we may inspire a hopeful future, where strife and change are woven together with beauty and hope.
